After more than 15 years of high-profile relationships, Selena Gomez has shared her thoughts on family planning.
In an interview with Time published on Wednesday, the former Disney star, now the founder of Rare Beauty at 31, confessed that she had initially struggled with being single several years ago. However, after finding solace during her five-year period of solitude, she devised a plan to start a family on her own if she hadn’t met a partner by the age of 35.
“I spent five years alone, and I grew accustomed to it. Many people fear solitude, and for about two years, I tormented myself mentally, but then I embraced it,” she revealed to the magazine. “Eventually, I devised a plan: I would adopt at 35 if I hadn’t found someone.”
Then, last year, Gomez went public with her relationship with 36-year-old record producer Benny Blanco.
The “Only Murders in the Building” actress shared with Time that while she initially viewed Blanco as just a friend, she discovered romantic feelings for him after attending a birthday party to meet one of his friends.
“It happened unexpectedly. Sometimes, things just fall into place when you least expect them to,” Gomez said. However, she emphasized that “he isn’t my sole source of happiness.”
Gomez also addressed Blanco’s recent comments on the Howard Stern Show about their relationship. Blanco described Gomez as “the coolest, nicest, sweetest,” and expressed his desire for children and marriage.
“He’s incapable of lying. If he’s asked a question, he’ll answer it,” Gomez explained to Time.
She also praised Blanco’s resilience against online negativity, especially given her own experiences as the most-followed woman on Instagram.
“I’m aware of the impact people’s words can have on my loved ones. Even my own fans, whom I cherish and believe have helped shape me, sometimes say hurtful things about my lifestyle,” she shared. “But he possesses a strength that shields him from all that noise. It’s truly admirable, and I cherish every moment with him.”
While Gomez typically maintains privacy regarding her personal life, she has been increasingly candid about her mental and physical health in recent years.
Her Apple TV+ documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me,” released in 2022, offered viewers a glimpse into the challenges she faces, including her mental health struggles, her battle with the autoimmune disease lupus, and her fame.
Gomez disclosed to Time that her lupus is currently in remission, thanks to medication managing her symptoms, and her kidney is functioning well seven years after she underwent a transplant from her friend Francia Raísa.
Though uncertain about the future, Gomez affirmed that Blanco is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
