The highly anticipated bout between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul hit a snag last week when Tyson had to postpone after failing a medical examination due to an ulcer flare-up on a flight. Despite the setback, both fighters insisted the match would proceed.
Within a week, the fight had a new date, and the trash talk between the two resumed.
With the fight back on, here are the latest updates.
Mike Tyson’s Health: Fighter Could Still Be Pulled from Fight
Despite the determination of both Tyson and Paul to make this fight happen, Tyson’s participation remains uncertain. Tela Mange, head of communications for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), reminded World Boxing News that a new date doesn’t guarantee the fight will occur.
“According to TDLR rules, obtaining a license does not automatically allow an individual to participate in an event if their health or safety is at risk,” said Mange. “As I’ve mentioned before, the Department will monitor the health of the fighters and gather additional information if necessary to ensure their health and safety. Besides the pre-licensing medical screening, TDLR’s ringside physicians also perform pre-fight physicals before the event.”
This means Tyson could be pulled from the fight as late as the day of the event. While Mange did not specify how close to the fight this could happen, it implies that until the first bell rings, there’s a possibility the fight might not take place on the new date.
Tyson vs. Paul New Date: Why is the Fight Happening on a Friday Now?
Originally scheduled for Saturday, July 20, the fight has been moved to Friday, November 15, which is unusual for major boxing events. So, why the change?
The venue remains AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. November is the middle of the NFL season, and the Cowboys are scheduled to host the Houston Texans on Monday, November 18. Stadium personnel prefer the fight to happen on Friday to allow enough time to prepare the stadium for the football game just three days later.
The original date was free of major sports conflicts, aside from Major League Baseball, making the November 15 date more challenging to plan. However, fight coordinators are confident their current plan will work without issues.
